More brumation questions

Postby reaperreptiles » Tue Jul 19, 2011 6:20 am

What is a good date to hault feeding for brumation and what is a good date to actually start brumation. I am wondering if I should leave them in there tanks but shut off the lights or put them in tubs? My house stays at about 69-71 degrees and I dont know if they need colder temps than that for correct brumation. My actual reptile room stays at about 75-78 degrees during the day. My basement is about 64-66, would it be better to keep them down there in tubs with some water? How does everybody go about brumation on here. I need to know specific dates on when to start preparing for this. thanks:)

Specific dates that work for one person in one climate, location and one year won't necessarily work for you... it is good to get an idea of when others start to brumate but it isn't an exact science and you kind of have to experiment to see what works for your climate and your blueys.

I am quite far north, so this won't necessarily be helpful, but mine start to brumate mid to end of November and wake up late February without any assistance from me (i.e. no changing temps or lights). If you have Northerns, they tend to be fairly in tune with winter in the Northern Hemisphere and will likely brumate on their own without you doing any work (but, of course, to breed you want to have a bit more control on when they start but more importantly when they come out of brumation).

Thanks, im in VA our winters are nothing compared to yours. Im probably just going to halt feeding around early november and then shut lights off come mid-november. I cant find alot of info on this and it seems alot of the experienced people are on the west coast were climates are alot different. if i could find someone on the east coast who has experience with this it would be great.
