BTS becoming immune to Cane Toad toxins

Postby Ophidiophile » Mon Feb 27, 2012 8:37 am

Here's a cool article that just came out. BTS are becoming immune to cane toad toxins, particularly in areas where an invasive plant called "mother-of-millions" has been introduced. The plant has a toxin remarkably similar to cane toad toxin and where BTS feed on the plant they develop tolerance to the toxins of BOTH the plant and the cane toads.

A link to a short report about the article:

A link to the full article in American Naturalist is at the bottom of the short report.

wow thats awesome. Goes to show that an environment with things that arent supposed to be there CAN adapt, albeit very slowly.
