Have you looked on Craig's List or at garage sales? You can get big aquariums really cheap around here that way. I don't have any idea if a rubbermaid tub would work or not, but I would think a glass aquarium would be much more desirable.

I have looked at craigslist, but not very many people keep very interesting pets up here, so not too many fish tanks for sale, or if they are, they are too small or JUNK! I think I would be okay with a rubbermaid tub because it would be more natural for the fish, and it be lots bigger, making it easier to care for.

what about stock tanks? You can get a good sized one for pretty cheap at farm supply stores. Around here we have Tractor Supply, Rural King, Big R, and a few others. I would def. try them before a tote. What size are you looking for? Petco usually has a $1/gal sale on their fish tanks. i dont know when their next sale is, but you may ask them. A good way to get a good price on aquariums.
Wish you lived closer to me. I have a crap load of misc. tanks I have been thinking of getting rid of.

When I moved and we had to dig a new pond, we kept our goldfish in the biggest Rubbermaid we could find. It worked marvelously.
They thrived, and even bred while in there lol

I kept my bearded dragon in a modified rubbermaid tub for a short time. I cut a hole in the lid and hot glued wire onto it so I could put a heatlamp on it and it worked perfectly fine. I don't know a lot about fish though. I don't see why it wouldn't work. It would just be kinda hard to view them and not as aesthetically pleasing as fish aquariums usually are.

Possible negatives:
1) Harder to see in with most plastics. Obviously this is a personal choice, and the fish probably prefer not being seen.
2) Make sure that that kind of plastic can't leech anything into the water. That would be my biggest worry.

I used a huge 55gal sized sterilite container when one of my tanks developed a leak in one of the seals, it worked great for the 2 weeks to get the tank resealed, seemed to grow algae faster but otherwise no adverse effects and the fish and snails didn't care.
