Hoggie Pictures

Postby Cherbear » Fri Feb 19, 2016 7:41 pm

Next to Australian blue tongues, western hognose snakes are my absolutely favorite species to work with.. Here is a good portion of my collection of little spitfires.. I do have a little lavender coming my way that I wish I had pics of!

They are actually from over here in the states.. There are the westerns (which you've guessed it.. are found out west/central of the country) and we also have easterns and southerns. I personally LOVE the way easterns look (they have a larger "cobra" hood), but I've been told countless times they need a frog/toad diet to thrive. In the wild these guys will typically eat frogs and toads which a lot of times they will find by using their shovel face nose to dig through dirt. Fortunately, western hognose seem to do very well on mice.

These guys are total clowns. They don't commonly bite, but instead they bluff. They may puff and huff, display their tiny cobra head, bump their nose into you a few times.. and if that doesn't work... they actually play dead. They'll flip themselves onto their backs and let their limp tongue hang right out.

Watched some videos of them playing dead was a comedic thing to watch, they seem like perfect pets wish they were available down here.

No way. That's crazy!! So cute! The only one I've ever met was a total contradiction to what you said, but there is always that one in the bunch... Well, I'm off to Google hognoses!

Used to find Easterns back home in Tennessee. Awesome little buggers. Was offered a pair of red Easterns for a pair of my Merauke babies, but I had to decline. Maybe soon! Nice collection.
