My Sydney sandstone form had babies in the last week. She usually has 3 or 4, but this season there are 6. Pictures will follow in the morning, too tired to upload tonight.

Congrats. Pics would be nice. I love this form. I have had a pair of these for a couple of years but haven't been able to persuade them to produce.

How come Sydney animals are so dark? Is the soil darker there than the rest of Australia?

Weathered exposed sandstone in the Sydney region is very dark in colour. Whereas the New England plateau animals live in amongst the granite boulders, hence the brighter speckles. Up in Southern Queensland cunninghams tend to live in fallen timber as well as the rocks, and tend to be more brown and drab in general. But they have a vast distribution, it's no wonder they vary so much within their range.

So that is the reason why Sydney locale Easterns are so dark in color? Interesting. :)

Maybe,
but the difference with the blueys is that they are found in a wider range of habitat types. The cunninghams are married to the rock/stone crevices and exfoliations. The blueys seem to be very prolific out in the basin amongst suburbia and out through the Cumberland plain. Easterns are found up in the mountains too living amongst the alpine blotchies, maybe El Lobo can give you a bit more info.

Wow. Those are beautiful! Excellent pictures. Looking at yours, I don't have this form at all

I have two forms, what I call a southern, silver speckled form like this:

Image

and this

Image

With babies like this

Image

I have two unrelated trios of these but they seem to be the same form.

Then, I have a pair of these which is the ones I thought might be Sydney sandstone:

Image

I can't find any more or better pictures. Will have to take some when I wake them up from their winter cooling.

Would appreciate thoughts on locales?

First lot look similar to mine, southern form, anywhere from sa into victoria, maybe into nsw to but id lean sa or victoria,2nd lot possably southern nsw,but again could go into victoria as well, they look similar but darker

The last one could be a variety of sydney sandstone form, looks smoothe like them in the pic,and these guys are highly variable between locales

Your baby one looks similar to my victorian line, litlle white speckles, just darker body coloring,is it from the 2nd group?

Thanks Rich. The baby is from the second group yes. I actually can't see much of a difference between those two southern groups - I know that animal looks a little darker in the picture but in the flesh that is not obvious. I actually thought the pinkish ones were Sydney sandstone but when I saw Rorybreaker's I thought no. I find the variation in these fascinating. If I were based in Aus I think I'd quite happily try to assemble a collection of different locale specific strains. One of the reasons I like this species is because I've had quite a lot of success with breeding them and most of mine are hand tame, they run to take roaches from my fingers. Fingers crossed for this season!!!! I have not bred the sandstones. That is my holy grail...

Mark, that last photo is an awesome looking Cunningham. There have been a small number of Cunninghams being brought back to the USA from Europe over the last few yrs and they are being sold as Kreffti. However, because only babies were ever offered, I never could tell if they would maintain the patterns as adults. I don't remember them having the amount of brown that these Sandstones have. I personally have seen just one Cunningham offered that looked like those Sandstones. If I could get animals like that I'd start a new project.

Southern Queensland locale Cunninghams, I think they are from further north than the granite belt/new England forms. They predominantly live in fallen timber and fence posts in this part of the country.

Husbandry wise, they are just the same as any other locale of Cunningham Skink.
