Quarantining...

Postby Corycat » Sun Jul 10, 2005 8:47 pm

Just wanna know...

(I know that this can certainly vary depending on what kind of animal it is, who you got the animal from, how much you trust the seller, etc.; but just treat this as if you just received the animal in question from somebody you don't really know all that well.)

I really don't quarantine...per se...because my animals don't roam together, BUT they do roam in the same areas at different times.....honestly I don't know!

In the past i have always kept my animals one per tank. I have always found they do better by themselves. Its easier to monitor your animals health when they are kept single. The only time a house an animal together is for breeding purposes.

Four people who DO NOT quarantine?? Who?

I agree, I do 2, sometimes up to 3 months.

Quarantine can have different meanings too, like separating to a completely different room, or just pure contact, etc.

I should of added in my post that any new animal i get i keep in a separate room for at least one month.

I always mean to do it but I get so excited about taking photos of them all together that I forget then I get worried that they're all going to die later and then I don't put the new one near the others again for about a month! I'm awful I know and I won't do it again, I just get so excited :upset: :leftout: :wimp: :sorry: ! I voted for one month though because from now on I will do it :teach: !

Depends on the animal.

Boas: minimum of 3 months
Pythons: minimum of 2 months
Wild caughts: minimum of 2-3 months plus treated by vet
All others: minimum of 1 month

I usually do in a seperate room, but with the 3 baby blueys and baby tort that was not possible this time (a seperate room is best or as far from the established animals in the same room is better than nothing). I take them out of quarantine once they are eating well, poop looks fine, they've shed at least once and seem otherwise healthy. I also clean the quarantined animals last and with a seperate set of cleaning supplies (sponges, gloves, etc). They are also all kept on paper towels while in quarantine. I keep deco simple as well (paper towel or toilet paper rolls, etc).

None of my animals are ever housed together and are never even allowed together (except the one time Phoebe and Cole were put together to observe possible signs of gender based on their behavior).

Quarantine is not just for when you house animals together or allow them to roam together. It's a great time to observe your animals behavior as well as health. There are also airborne illnesses, etc. that you have to be wary of - that's why it's best to put them in a seperate room if possible.

I can just imagine how devasted I would be if I found out that a new animal I introduced into my collection w/o quarantine got all my animals sick - or worse.

I usually quarantine for 3 months to observe them carefully incase they have some kind of health issue or parasites. Getting a fecal done on your reptiles is a very good idea too because some parasites don't show signs of being there but come up in their feces.

My blueys both came from Ray, and I definitely trust him to have healthy animals, so I voted no, I didn't quarantine my blueys...
BUT, if I were to get a reptile from somewhere else, I def would..
Like my corn snake I did for a month and a half.

I've only been able to get one fecal done, and that was on Titan, and that was because I was at school, and she was clean!!

We don't quarantine as far as totally seperate rooms, other than Don's is in one room and mine are in another room.
We do however keep each in their own cage, with their own furniture, bowls, basking rocks, ect.
We also wash our hands with disinfectant soap before handling each different animal and/or anything in their cages.

I take it you mean mostly because of the non-quarantining number? I guess I'm not . . . :?

I knew that a few people haven't done it, but wow...

A whole collection could be wiped out by ONE animal not being quarantined. They cannot breathe the same air either. Remember, this poll was based on purchasing an animal from somebody that you don't really know.
