Stuck shed on mouth area

Postby CalistaL » Sat Oct 20, 2018 6:39 pm

For a while now my skink has had what appears to be crusted on shed stuck around her mouth. I did take her to the vet and they said
it's not mouth rot (thank goodness) but it still worries me to leave it and so far it hasn't come off, though it gets better after she sheds.
It seems to come off if I soak it and rub gently with a wet q-tip, but I can't seem to get rid of it for good. She eats and moves around normally
otherwise and has a great appetite. I do provide her with a humid hide that she uses sometimes.

Has anyone ever had a similar problem? If so how did you resolve it? Any suggestions would be great!

Too much of the wrong kind of protein in her diet will cause this kind of problem (bad shedding) …. you need to adjust her diet to become more "natural".

I feed her all natural, fresh greens and vegetables and either cooked chicken or egg. She also gets Reptivite supplements.

Any suggestions of things I could change in her diet to help her get more of what she needs? Foods that would be good for better protein?
Or maybe other supplements that might help?

I have the same issues with mine off and on for years. I, like you, thought it was mouth rot at first and panicked but a vet quickly told me it wasn't. Sometimes a bump in heat and humidity can clear it up, otherwise just keep wiping the gunk off. In my experience, it seems to be pretty common and not something to worry about as long as your skink is eating and there isn't any redness or swelling.

Okay, thank you I will try and keep doing that then, maybe mist her tank a bit since it is getting drier this time of year
