Building a hide

Postby jdheff1982 » Sun Apr 01, 2018 9:03 pm

Howdy peeps!

Ok, so I'm tired of using cardboard boxes as hides. Since Rosco likes to climb about, I figured it'd would be good for him to have something to help file down his nails, too. So, been looking at outdoor paver bricks. They're dirt cheap and it wouldn't take many to build a nice hide. So, here's what I need to know: best sterilization method and animal safe adhesive. I need the adhesive to glue the pavers together so he doesn't try to dig under them or push them out potentially causing the roof to cave in. I won't glue it to the bottom of his enclosure. Still need to remove it for cleanings and such.

Thanks in advance!

Sounds like a great idea! Maybe you could bake them in the oven to sterilize? I really don't know what temps they can tolerate. I have made some hides out of those plastic ones commonly used for snakes, I glue a piece of cork tile fit to size and I use aquarium safe silicone. Don't know how that would hold up with pavers, I might give that a try myself!

I think baking is probably the best method. Reptile mountain/tc Houston did a video on this-link below

I used aquarium sealant to glue together slate for my skinks basking platform and then let it dry for 24-48 hours

Thanks for the replies. I'll most likely do this this weekend.

So, say baking in the oven isn't an option. What about bleach in the bath tub followed by a thorough rinse?

Thanks again!

Sounds ok. I think I'd just scrub it down real good with a brush and some dawn detergent.

That'll work for me, thanks! Plan to get the pavers Saturday sometime.

Got it installed today. Had planned on a 24x12, but couldn't make it work. So, it's more like 16x12. Rosco is currently making use of it, lol! Here's a pic:

I had a piece of slate under his CHE for basking, but used that as a cover for the front of his hide. I used the other 12x12 paver as the basking pad instead.
