I'm interested.

Postby EfcSeany » Fri Oct 20, 2017 5:28 am

Hello all,

I hope you're well.

I now have a 4ft x 2ft x 2ft vivarium spare after moving one of my pre-existing reptiles to another enclosure and would now like to enter the world of BTS keeping.

I have done plenty of research (as with all my reptiles), but I am a little confused when it comes to lighting etc - there appears to be conflicting information over the internet.

Am I right in saying that I need these for the UVB? :

Reflector: http://www.reptilecentre.com/arcadia-t5-reflector-34-inch_p22366972.htm#.WenqwmhSzcs
UVB Tube: http://www.reptilecentre.com/arcadia-t5-d3-reptile-lamp-12-39w-34in_p22366943.htm#.WenqumhSzcs

Thank you in advance,

Sean :)

As much as I'd love to answer your question concretely, I too have read varying opinions on UVB light for BTS.

I just purchased my first BTS last week and haven't yet picked up a UVB light (Though I do have a heat lamp for basking)

I'm still reading up on it and would like more info, but will probably err on the side of caution and get a UVB lamp.
I want my BTS to be as healthy as possible.
There doesn't seem to be any negative effects that I can find from a UVB light with BTS - so I guess it's a case of it may or may not help, but it won't hurt.

Some UVB bulbs can hurt your skink's eyes or cause your skink to overdose on D3.

Please say which bulbs you are talking about.

Mercury bulbs, but I've also heard that they are safe. There's a lot of debate whether or not they emit damaging waves.

Well, I meant appropriate UVB bulbs.

Of course not all UVB bulbs are created equal!
You wouldn't want a high powered spot light on any animal.

Would something like this be too much for a Halmahera BTS?

Trying to figure out which 'bulb' strength is good. Can't seems to find any more info than 5.0 or 10.0, etc but none say which is appropriate for a BTS.

<<<< definitely needs UVA & UVB , either 5% UVB from a 26W compact or from a T8 or T5HO (ie EASTERNS) or a 10% UVB (for NORTHERNS & INDONESIAN BTs) , no UVB ==> MBD guaranteed , dietary vitD3 doesn't cut it.

Or a 6% or 12% T8 or T5HO Arcadia SLIMLINE kit , see http://www.reptile-specialist.co.uk/pro ... 60cm-.html , these come ready to use complete with a UVB tube .

Would this work & has everything I need for the UVB, including a reflector?

Baring in mind it's only a 2ft tube - I can't find a 36" tube.

Thank you.

Yes , a 2ft tube is plenty in 3ft - 4ft viv as you need a area where the BT can retreat to that's not as brightly lit up and where UV is low , just like you need a warm and cool zone .
