Found a 3 fold problem today

Postby jdheff1982 » Sat Aug 12, 2017 4:27 pm

So, I use a CHE attached to a Zilla thermostat. I found my BTS staring at the heater and thought I check with the temp probe. No heat. Run to the pet store to get another CHE. Get home and get it installed and still no heat. OK, the thermostat is on, the lamp switch is on, but no heat. I unplugged lamp and tested a light bulb in it and it works. So, this means something wrong with the thermostat. I pull it apart and find a tiny fuse soldered onto the circuit board. Facepalm! Zilla couldn't make it simple to swap fuses. So now, I'm kinda stuck: buy a new one or find someone to fix my current one. If I had the tools, I'd do it myself. I'd even go as far as installing a removable fuse system.

Tha't's bad design.... essentially they (Zilla) want you buy a new thermostat.

Are you handy with a soldering iron ?

You could buy a fuse holder and new fuse of suitable specs , bridge across the now open circuited fuse and fuse hold and be back in business.

The board has another pair of holes next to fuse. I stuffed a staple in there and it still doesn't output power. Rest of unit appears fine. Even the relay clicks when cycled. My guess maybe one of the diodes is shot or the IC is shot. I don't think I need it now. The new CHE is 50 watts less and holds basking temp to about 105* F.

I used to do soldering work, but got rid of the equipment years ago. Thanks though!
