Hello from Winnipeg, Manitoba!

Postby Teeger » Tue Apr 03, 2012 2:48 pm

Hi everyone, My name is Randy and I am new to this site. I am looking to get my very first blue tongue skink this summer at our yearly reptile expo(September)...that is also if Melanie(Fatal_S) has a successful breeding season and if she will allow me to adopt one of her baby BTS. I've been lurking on here and soaking up all the information I can and just preparing for my first BTS.

This is what I've gathered so far for supplies-- the enclosure is 36x18x12 with screen top and I will be picking up a mega-ray uvb bulb...please feel free to let me know what else I need or what to change.

Welcome!! :D Always great to see more Canadians.

Getting a baby from Mel is a great idea. She has had lots of breedings so hopefully you'll have lots to choose from.

Hello mate, looks fine for now, he'll grow out of some of the items you've got pretty quickly but you'll be prepared for that I expect, can I ask how you're going to monitor the basking rock temp, digital temp guns are brilliant for that if you haven't already got one. Is it an all or nothing deal for Fatal and one of her bubs?

Oh forgot to say, you might want to cover two or three of the sides with a scenic background or something, it can help skittish youngsters feel safer and can calm down a bit quicker.

For a little while paper towel will be fine~ but in the long run I would recommend a burrowing substrate. :D I think it keeps them less stress, and it's a plus as a hide as well!

Can't wait for pics, I'm so jealous of you canadians... You get Fatal!

Hiya Teeger! Great to see you on here :D

Should have lots of babies to choose from this year. I've bred Northerns, Northern x Caramel Northern, IJs and Tanimbars.

Keep in mind UVB doesn't really penetrate through tightly-woven screen. If you can't poke things through the screen easily, the UVB part of the light becomes pretty useless.

Hi

I am from Winnipeg too :) I bought 2 skinks from Melanie last year . I think that having different substrate would be good . Aspen shavings are good for them to hide in .

I will get appropriate size items as he/she grows. Fatal is the only breeder in Winnipeg that I know and I see how well she keeps her skinks and how passionate she is about them and I wanna start off with a healthy CBB BTS :D

I will definitely have BTS at the expo. I may bring babies if I still have some available. Right now there are 23/28 2012 Northerns looking for homes.

Lol yeah its no fair! I need a skink guru close by, I'm jealous and shamelessly so! Welcome and I hope you'll bring me along with you since I'm learning still. If it wasn't such a pain to get them from Canada-land to the USA I'd be all over one of Fatals' babies. I recently talked to my roommate who is also thinking of getting a BTS (which is freaking awesome) but he's more interested in shinglebacks and other rarer types. Either way! It will be fun to have another to learn along with me :)

Yay for more Canadian members! I am also getting one of Mel's babies this year :P Maybe another one next year if I am lucky.
Also is that just a Exo-Terra water bowl? I am kind of having trouble finding nice looking dishes big enough for an adult BTS where I am.

Exo-Terra makes an excellent one that you can get at petsmart (I'm not sure if Canada has them) or PetCo thats made for large iguana thats really heavy and nice. I have one for my beardy and its large enough to fit an adult bluey in it if they really wanted to lay in there.

Yay Canada! I'm also getting one from Mel this year! I don't really have anything to add to that, but if anyone will be at the reptile expo in TORONTO this year, we should meet up!
