Madagascar hissing cockroaches as feeder?

Hi all,

Dos anyone use the larger variety of cockroaches as feeders?
especially the Madagascar Hissers.

Looking to kill 2 birds with one stone.

Both Me and my son think they are neat .... the roaches plus we already owning a BTS "Hubert"

Sorry if this is one of thos duh questions but still new at owning BTS.

We are going to the Expo in Toronto on sunday and are starting to get the "Shoping List" together......(evil laugh) one list to show the wife and one list of "the wants" easier to explain in SUV on way home than to ask before buying....lol
me and the dogs will be camping on couch for sure next week....lol

You definitely can use them. I've used 4 kinds of roaches. Hissers get big and my skinks seemed scared of the adults, so I mostly fed juvis. Hissers are slowish to breed though, not the greatest for food source, but good for a treat and awesome pet bugs IMO. I miss my hissers.

Best feeders are Dubia I think. Discoid are about the same. Good sized adults, easy keepers and quick breeders.

I hated the Turkistan roaches because they were like crickets (small, quick and creepy). Apparently reptiles love them, but my blueys were usually too slow to catch them. And did I mention creepy?

We have a dubia colony. We feed the subadults to our breeding leopard geckos and the adults to our BTS. It took Coomassie a bit to realize they were food. My husband had to bop him on the nose with one before he ate it. Now if we give him one or two, he goes digging in his tank looking for more. I've never raised any other kinds of roaches but I've heard the hissers are better at getting loose. Dubias are fast little buggers but they can't fly, they don't bite, and they are super easy to breed. I feel like they make a great project as well (probably true of any colony). I really enjoy the insect colony.

Hissers can climb just about anything(bug stop or vaseline will help discourage them but I still would not trust them in open top containers). The babies are almost as small as dubias so can squeeze through tiny gaps. They are definetly neat little creatures but if you don't want any getting out and running around the house for a bit(won't live very long in truth) you need to take extra measures to ensure their are no escapees.

The adults are large and heavily armored-I suppose they could be fed out if they were butchered first. Nymphs would be fine.

this is one of the only times i will ever do this uhhhhhh cockroaches . i am sorry i just can not see my self any where near them. ok i did it and unless someone posts something on small spiders i will never do it again.
(small spiders i hate but big tarantulas are really cool)

I have always been interested in insects. I brought a few displays (scorpions & Moths) home form the middle east my last tour there. I ued to make Ant farms out of cheese wize jars for the kids.

my wife has mealies and supers breeding but they are borring. I seen a video of one of the Toronto reptile expos and in it was a colony of hisser on this drift wood... thought it was soo cool. Something different for sure.

so i figured if i could work on the "Feeder" aspect maybe the wife will go for it..

I bought one for Stubbs one time and I wish I had made a video of him trying to eat it. It stayed still while he checked him out and licked him from head to toe. Then when he tried to chomp down on it, it let out a hiss. Stubbs quickly let go and looked at him. He cocked his head like a pug - back and forth, then tried again. Each time he put his mouth on him, the roach hissed. Sometimes he would hiss back at him. After about 3 or 4 minutes, he finally decided that anything that talked back to him was something he didn't need to consume. He went to the other side of his cage and got in his hide. The roach had a run through the substrate for two days when I finally took him out.
